Сам город Армантьер, который указывается как место проживания той уродливой девицы, находится на севере Франции. Он удерживался британскими войсками практически всю войну вплоть до немецкого наступления весной 1918 года. Сама песня является переделкой старой французской версии начала ХIХ века про трех прусских офицеров и дочь хозяина гостиницы.
